Former Chief Justice David Maraga has urged Kenyans not to re-elect President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election, claiming the country risks further economic and governance challenges if the current administration remains in power.

Speaking in Kisii on Friday, Maraga criticised the Kenya Kwanza government, alleging that several major projects introduced since Ruto assumed office were designed to facilitate the misuse of public funds rather than improve the lives of citizens.

The retired Chief Justice singled out projects such as the Affordable Housing programme, Talanta Stadium, the Social Health Authority (SHA), the sale of Safaricom shares, and the eCitizen platform, claiming they had been used to siphon billions of shillings from taxpayers.

“It will be a tragedy if we allow Ruto to make a comeback because since he came to power, everything he has come up with is a programme meant to loot Kenyans,” Maraga said during his address.

Maraga further stated that his recent tours across the country had exposed the harsh economic realities facing many Kenyans, with some families struggling to afford even a single meal a day.

According to the former CJ, he has so far visited 43 counties as part of his engagements with wananchi to better understand the challenges they face. He said the experiences and testimonies he encountered painted a worrying picture of rising poverty, unemployment, and economic hardship.

The remarks come amid increasing political activity ahead of the 2027 elections, with opposition leaders and critics of the government intensifying attacks on the Kenya Kwanza administration over the cost of living, taxation, and public spending.
