The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has dismissed reports alleging that it has imposed tax debts on former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju, amid his ongoing financial and property disputes.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the tax agency termed the claims as misleading and inaccurate, clarifying that Tuju remains fully compliant with his tax obligations. KRA further emphasised that there are no outstanding tax issues linked to the former CS.
“The reports suggesting that Raphael Tuju has tax arrears with the Authority are false and amount to misinformation. He is a compliant and valued taxpayer,” KRA stated.
The clarification comes at a time when Tuju has been in the public spotlight over legal battles related to loan repayments and ownership of certain properties. The circulating claims had suggested that his financial challenges had extended to tax-related issues, prompting concern and speculation.
However, KRA maintained that its records show no such liabilities, reiterating its commitment to transparency and accuracy in matters relating to taxpayer compliance. The Authority also cautioned the public against spreading unverified information that could damage reputations.
Tuju, who previously served in key government roles, has recently faced scrutiny over disputes with lenders, with some cases currently before the courts. Despite this, KRA’s statement seeks to separate those matters from his standing with the tax body.
The agency urged media outlets and members of the public to verify information before publication, noting that misinformation can create unnecessary panic and undermine trust in public institutions.
The development now shifts attention back to Tuju’s ongoing legal and financial challenges, even as the tax authority distances itself from the controversy.
