The government, through the Ministry of Health, has issued a public advisory warning Kenyans against engaging in prolonged tree-hugging challenges without first undergoing a medical check-up, citing rising health concerns.

The warning follows a surge in the trend inspired by environmental activist Truphena Muthoni, who completed a 72-hour tree-hugging challenge on December 11, 2025, surpassing her earlier 48-hour attempt. Her feat earned national attention and sparked copycat challenges across the country.

Since then, tree hugging has been adopted by individuals and groups for various causes, including cancer awareness, environmental conservation, fundraising, and social protests. In Limuru, Kiambu County, a young man attempted the challenge to raise school fees for his Grade 10 brother, while in Meru, another participant hugged a tree in protest against rampant banditry. In Western Kenya, a young woman was rushed to Bugoma Hospital shortly after completing a 74-hour tree-hugging attempt.

With the challenge gaining popularity, particularly among young people, the Ministry of Health has raised alarm over the potential health risks involved.

Speaking on Thursday, January 15, Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni described prolonged tree hugging as a strenuous physical activity that should not be undertaken without proper medical assessment.

“I have seen people who are really in the mood for hugging trees. It is a strenuous exercise. Before doing the challenge, make sure you go for a medical check-up,” she said.

The PS revealed that several cases had been recorded of participants collapsing and requiring emergency medical attention after attempting the challenge without prior assessment.

While stressing that the government is not banning the practice, Muthoni urged participants to prioritise their health, undergo medical screening, and prepare adequately before engaging in such activities, noting that advocacy should never come at the cost of personal wellbeing.
