Kenya’s National Treasury has given the green light to a Ksh 3.45 billion energy and lighting initiative in Eldoret, setting the stage for the project to move into the contract negotiation phase under a public-private partnership (PPP) framework. Cleared on April 10, the development signals a significant push to upgrade infrastructure in the country’s newest city.

The project is designed to overhaul Eldoret’s public lighting by shifting it to clean energy, boosting efficiency, reliability, and safety in major public areas. Its approval follows a multi-stage review process that began with the Project Information Pack (PIP) in November 2025, paving the way for a detailed feasibility assessment.

At the core of the plan is a 3MWac solar power facility paired with a 9MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This setup will supply electricity to streetlights and selected public facilities independently of the national grid, ensuring uninterrupted lighting even during power outages.

The rollout will also see existing streetlights converted to solar, alongside the installation of about 12,000 modern LED lights and 90 high-mast units. Additionally, over 2,200 faulty lights across the city will be repaired and restored. Public spaces such as parks, traffic systems, and municipal buildings will also be linked to the new renewable energy network.

Beyond illumination, the initiative introduces smart technology, including adaptive LED lighting fitted with CCTV cameras featuring facial recognition, as well as intelligent control systems. An underground fibre-optic network will support real-time monitoring and maintenance, enhancing connectivity and urban management.

The project comes nearly two years after Eldoret attained city status, joining Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and Nakuru. Officials in Uasin Gishu County say the upgrade will help drive a 24-hour economy, with improved lighting expected to deter crime, boost safety, and extend business hours.

Project Coordinator Silas Leting noted that the plan positions Eldoret among forward-looking cities embracing innovation, sustainability, and security to drive growth.
