The National Police Service has announced fresh changes within its senior leadership following a reshuffle approved by the National Police Service Board.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja appointed Assistant Inspector General Johana Kiplangat Tonui as the new Commandant of the General Service Unit (GSU), replacing AIG Fredrick Egesa Nyongesa. The appointments take effect immediately.

Tonui, who previously served at the Directorate of Operations, now assumes command of the elite paramilitary unit tasked with handling specialized security operations, counter-terrorism missions, and the protection of key national installations.

Meanwhile, Nyongesa has been redeployed as Deputy Commandant of the GSU. His new role will involve supporting the unit’s leadership in operational planning, personnel management, logistics, and maintaining overall preparedness.

The reshuffle also saw Assistant Inspector General Paul Maingo Mumo appointed Director of the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU). Mumo moves from the Directorate of Quality Assurance and will now lead efforts aimed at strengthening discipline, professionalism, and accountability within the police service. The Internal Affairs Unit is responsible for investigating complaints and misconduct allegations involving police officers.

The latest changes signal ongoing efforts to reorganize leadership within Kenya’s security agencies and enhance operational efficiency across critical departments.

The police reshuffle comes shortly after President William Ruto approved several appointments and promotions within the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF). Among those affected was Major General John Maiso Nkoimo, who was named Deputy Commander of the Kenya Army. Other senior officers were elevated to strategic command positions, reinforcing the military’s leadership structure as part of a broader reorganization within the country’s security sector.
