Martha Karua has dismissed claims by Rigathi Gachagua, the DCP Party leader, to position himself as the political kingpin of the Mt. Kenya region ahead of the 2027 general election.

Speaking during a heated interview on Wednesday that has since circulated widely online, Karua’s remarks exposed growing divisions within the opposition, as she openly explained why she cannot align herself under Gachagua’s leadership.

“Gachagua is not the Mt. Kenya kingpin. He is my junior. The people of Mt. Kenya had already distanced themselves from the government while he was still Deputy President. He found us here. Being more vocal than us does not make him the kingpin; he is just a party leader like me or Uhuru Kenyatta – nothing special,” she stated.

The People’s Liberation Party (PLP) party leader further argued that Gachagua cannot claim to have led the region out of United Democratic Alliance (UDA), noting that his DCP Party was formed after Mt. Kenya had already shifted its political stance away from President William Ruto.

She concluded by challenging the former Deputy President to wait for the 2027 general election, where the electorate will ultimately determine the region’s political direction. #Karua
