Kenyan Eric Maloba Held by ICE After Tractor-Trailer Crash in US

Kenyan national Eric Maloba has been taken into custody by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following a tractor-trailer crash in Hamblen County, Tennessee.

According to ICE, Maloba was arrested on August 28, 2026, after the crash involving a commercial truck. Investigators reportedly established that Maloba holds a commercial driver’s licence issued in Texas and was instructing a trainee who was seeking to obtain a commercial driver’s licence when the accident occurred.

Maloba was subsequently transferred into ICE custody in Knoxville, where he remains as immigration proceedings continue. The agency says his detention is linked to his immigration status rather than a reported criminal conviction arising from the crash.

ICE said Maloba originally entered the United States legally in 2018, but his authorised period of admission expired in April 2019. The agency alleges that he remained in the country after his authorised stay had ended.

His arrest was carried out with the assistance of a local law-enforcement agency participating in the federal 287(g) programme. The programme allows participating state and local officers to perform certain immigration enforcement functions in cooperation with ICE.

The case has attracted attention because it comes amid increased scrutiny by US authorities of immigrants who hold commercial driver’s licences. ICE has used Maloba’s case to highlight its broader immigration enforcement campaign and its efforts to expand cooperation with local law-enforcement agencies.

However, available reports do not establish that Maloba was criminally charged or convicted for causing the Tennessee crash. The public information released by ICE focuses primarily on his immigration status and detention.
