Tension gripped Nairobi on Monday evening after police launched a high-profile operation to locate and arrest Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja following a directive from a Senate watchdog committee over alleged contempt of Parliament.

Authorities are pursuing the county boss after the Senate ordered his arrest, triggering a manhunt linked to his alleged failure to honour parliamentary summons.

Reports indicate that officers pitched camp outside City Hall in the Nairobi Central Business District for several hours, but initial attempts to trace the governor bore no fruit.

It is believed that Sakaja may have received prior information about the planned arrest and vacated his office moments before police arrived.

Images and videos from the scene showed heightened security presence at City Hall as officers combed the premises in search of the embattled governor.

Confirming the operation, Regional Police Commander Issa Mohamud stated that the move was informed by a resolution passed last week by the Senate County Public Accounts Committee (CPAC).
