Most state officials in the current government have become increasingly arrogant and unaccountable.
Power should never be abused simply because someone has access to the instruments of the state. Authority is a responsibility, not a license for intimidation.
It increasingly feels as though guns and power have ended up in the wrong hands. A firearm is not meant to be used to threaten people or to settle personal disagreements. It is certainly not something to be flaunted in public to project status or instill fear.
Some young leaders who have been entrusted with power appear to treat firearms as symbols of prestige, displaying them in clubs, restaurants, and other public places to impress others rather than uphold the law.
What is even more disturbing is that when such individuals are involved in fatal incidents, there is often little visible accountability. Their firearms are rarely withdrawn, meaningful consequences seem absent, and life moves on as though nothing happened.
A society that normalizes the misuse of power risks eroding public trust in its institutions. Those entrusted with authority should be held to the highest standards of discipline, responsibility, and accountability.
In this country, I have never seen any politician who has mishandled his or her gun prosecuted and punished. They are all free and going on with their daily businesses as usual.
We have, as well, seen a prominent Nairobi MCA close to this government brandish a gun in public. He is still free to date. Now PS Fikirini Jacobs is embroiled in another fatal gun scandal, and, I doubt anyone will raise their voice or finger on him. Life goes on! Not even a fellow politician will say a word because these are birds of the same feather.
