President William Ruto is preparing for an official trip to Italy later this week, with the visit expected to reinforce diplomatic and economic ties while opening new avenues for cooperation between the two nations.

The three-day visit will build on Kenya’s long-standing relationship with Italy, with earlier indications from the President pointing to efforts to secure about Ksh1 billion for the upgrade of Nyamira County Referral Hospital.

Providing further insight into the agenda, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi said the trip goes beyond a single funding initiative and is designed to advance wider strategic interests shared by both countries.

Mudavadi noted that discussions will prioritise strengthening Kenya’s engagement with European partners, focusing on areas such as trade expansion, investment opportunities, labour mobility, and multilateral cooperation frameworks.

A major focus of the meetings will be boosting economic collaboration with Italian institutions and private sector players. Talks are expected to cover infrastructure financing, partnerships in renewable energy, and increasing access for Kenyan agricultural exports to European markets.

Among the expected outcomes are fresh financing commitments for key government projects, the signing of new Memoranda of Understanding, and faster implementation of existing bilateral agreements aimed at enhancing economic cooperation.

“The engagements will centre on aligning development priorities and unlocking new opportunities in trade, investment, and strategic partnerships between Kenya and Italy,” Mudavadi said.

The visit is also expected to position Kenya as an attractive destination for Italian investors, particularly in sectors such as infrastructure, manufacturing, agriculture, and clean energy.

Kenya and Italy have maintained a stable development partnership over the years, guided in part by a 2023–2027 cooperation framework valued at over Ksh15 billion in aid and concessional loans. Their collaboration has largely focused on agriculture, renewable energy, ICT, and infrastructure development, with Italy previously supporting projects such as the construction of the Itare Dam.
