At least two people have reportedly lost their lives following a deadly road crash along Riverside Drive in Westlands, Nairobi, on Monday morning, August 17, 2026.
The accident involved a Range Rover and a motorcycle, with early reports indicating that the two vehicles collided after the SUV allegedly lost control.
Witnesses at the scene claimed the Range Rover had been travelling at high speed and was overtaking dangerously moments before the crash. The vehicle reportedly overturned several times, leaving it severely wrecked.
Preliminary information suggests that the motorcycle rider and the driver of the Range Rover died at the scene. Several other people who were travelling in the SUV, reportedly including foreign nationals, were injured and taken to hospital for medical attention.
Photographs from the scene showed the Range Rover badly damaged, with much of the vehicle’s bodywork destroyed following the impact and subsequent overturning.
The exact circumstances that led to the crash had not been established by the time of reporting. Police are expected to conduct investigations to determine what caused the collision and establish whether speeding or dangerous overtaking contributed to the tragedy.
The accident also resulted in significant traffic disruption along Riverside Drive, a busy road connecting several parts of Nairobi. The route is particularly important because it links Westlands and Chiromo Road with areas such as Lavington and Kileleshwa through James Gichuru and Muringa roads.
Riverside Drive is also commonly used by motorists seeking alternative access between Westlands and other parts of the city when traffic builds up along Waiyaki Way.
The latest deaths come amid continued concern over road safety in Kenya, where crashes have claimed numerous lives in recent months.
According to figures from the Kenya Red Cross Society, 23 road crashes recorded across the country during the first two weeks of August 2026 left 31 people dead and another 75 seriously injured.
The figures have once again highlighted the need for motorists to observe speed limits, avoid dangerous overtaking and exercise greater caution, particularly on busy urban roads.
