Cardiologist Dan Gikonyo has told the court that William Ruto personally called him to inquire about the health of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua after he was admitted to Karen Hospital in October 2024.

While testifying on Wednesday, May 13, Gikonyo said the president contacted him as Gachagua underwent treatment and medical assessments.

“Your honour, there are always follow-up calls from relatives, parents and friends. And in this particular case, I must be honest enough to specify that I did receive a call from the president,” Gikonyo told the court.

He explained that he informed Ruto that doctors were still carrying out several tests and that an update would be shared once the examinations were complete.

“He asked about the status of the patient, and I responded accordingly. I just said that we are in the process of doing various tests, and as soon as we conclude, we shall let him know,” he stated.

Gikonyo also disclosed that he first sought consent from Gachagua before sharing any medical details, saying the former deputy president approved the communication.

The doctor’s testimony came during a heated cross-examination, where lawyers challenged the strength and completeness of the medical evidence submitted in court.

During the session, counsel for the respondents questioned whether key supporting records such as echocardiogram graphs, imaging scans and laboratory reports had been attached to the affidavit concerning Gachagua’s condition.

Gikonyo admitted that although the tests were conducted, the supporting medical documents were not included in the affidavit filed before the court.
