Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has declared that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is facing internal turbulence and urgently needs a National Delegates Convention (NDC) to restore stability and chart a clear leadership path.
Speaking candidly, Owino said the party is experiencing a “storm” that cannot be ignored, insisting that only an NDC can provide a legitimate platform to resolve emerging divisions. He argued that ODM must be handed over immediately through an orderly and respectful process, stressing that his position is not intended to disrespect any individual within the party.
Owino clarified that his remarks should not be interpreted as an attack on Senator Moses Wetang’ula, noting that “there is nothing wrong with Moses.” However, he emphasized that political leadership follows seasons, adding pointedly that “it is Joshua’s time,” a statement widely interpreted as a call for generational transition within the party’s top leadership.
Addressing Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga directly, Owino challenged him to reflect on the direction ODM should take, asking whether the party should be led by someone of his age or by a younger leader. He reminded party members that politics is dynamic and must be approached realistically, without sentimentality.
To bolster his argument, Owino cited recent opinion polls, which he claimed show him leading with 33 per cent support. According to the same polls, Oburu Odinga trailed at 10 per cent, followed by Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga at 7 per cent, while other contenders shared about 1 per cent.
Owino maintained that the polling figures demonstrate a clear message from the electorate, insisting that the voice of the people should guide ODM’s next steps as it navigates a critical moment in its political future.
